Daniel Marsden
On fifty days since Easter morn
Christians reborn no longer mourn.
The Savior went into the sky
Their great rabbi was glorified.
But he before ascension rise
promised a prize for desperate eyes.
Then suddenly into the town
A violent sound came rushing down.
Not as a dove, the Spirit came,
But He proclaimed in licking flame.
Then languages they spoke and heard
And undeterred, they spread the Word.
And Peter looked upon the crowd.
He rose unbowed and spoke aloud.
In forms of speech now understood,
In brotherhood, the peoples could
Have Gospel news proclaimed to them.
Thus shone the gem of Bethlehem.
That was the Feast of Pentecost,
When those once lost shook off their frost.
The Holy Ghost did then inspire,
With tongues of fire, righteous desire.
Even today the Paraclete’s
Unceasing feat does not retreat.
Daniel graduated from Hampden-Sydney College in 2023, majoring in history and
minoring in rhetoric. As an undergraduate, he became president of the Union-Philanthropic
Literary Society. He participated in the Virginia Programme at Oxford, studying early
modern English history and literature at St. Anne’s College. He authored peer reviewed
articles on novel methodologies in remote sensing archaeology in Alaska. Daniel continued
this research interest by working for NASA providing remote sensing support to a native
Alaskan community relocating due to coastal erosion, using InSAR to measure permafrost
subsidence. Afterwards, Daniel was awarded a residential fellowship with the John Jay
Institute. Daniel completed his MA in Humanities at Ralston College in 2025, which
included an intensive study of Ancient Greek. In addition, Daniel has taken a total of six
years of Latin and is currently attempting to cultivate some skill in English verse.
