The Locus is pleased to receive outside submissions on a rolling basis. We consider submissions under the categories of art, poetry, essay, and philosophy. We only accept previously unpublished material. We are not exclusive, so you may send pieces to other publishers, but we ask that, if the work is accepted elsewhere before you hear from us, you please email us and request that we remove that specific work from our consideration.

For your submission, in the subject line of your email, please write “ATTN:” and the genre which you are submitting (i.e., ATTN: Poetry, ATTN: Essay, etc.). Please include a brief bio, not exceeding 150 words.  Written submissions should be submitted in a docx. format. Be sure to include your contact information and the most suitable email for you. Remember to check for typos and grammar in ALL of your work (both in the bio and the piece which you are submitting). Please see specific submission guidelines below.

Please only submit under one category at a time and please wait to submit again until you have received a response from your previous submission. Send all submissions to locusjournal@gmail.com. Finally, we ask that you read some of the work published through The Locus to see if we are a proper fit for your piece.

Essay and Review: Essays and reviews should be between 500 and 1200 words. We are happy to consider opinion pieces as part of the Essay category, however, we ask that you maintain a respectful tone throughout your work. Essays may be on art works, poems, literature, theology, philosophy, music, or opinion.

Book reviews must give proper credit to the author of the book being reviewed. While criticism is important, we ask that you not use your review as a basis for negative review, but attempt to give a well-thought-out, holistic consideration of the work in question.

Poetry: We accept poetry of all types, experimental or traditional. For experimental poems, we will do our best to maintain original formatting, however we cannot guarantee exact formatting. Long poems should not exceed 3 pages. You may submit up to 4 smaller poems per submission. Please submit all poems in one document, clearly distinguishing between poems by italicizing the title of each work as it begins.

Fine/Digital Art: All artworks must be submitted digitally. Please only submit copies of your work. The same publication rights apply for images as for written works. See below for details on publication rights.

Publication Rights: The Locus does not retain rights to your work after publication, however we do ask that you credit The Locus as the first appearance of your work, should it be republished elsewhere in the future.

We will attempt to respond within a 90 day period, however, due to submission numbers, we may not always be able to offer specific feedback. We appreciate your consideration of The Locus as home for your work!
